When luminaries such as Mike Huckaby proclaim you never need to make a record again you know that something special has gone down. UK producer/DJ Red Rackem (aka Danny Berman) launched his Bergerac label in late 2010 with a bona fida smasher How I Program. Since then Bergerac have released the critically acclaimed Red Rackem debut album The Early Years and a second single Feel My Tears which brought him to the attention of hot UK label Ramp Recordings who promptly signed the next Red Rackem album (which is due for release later on this year). 2011 was another busy year for Danny with an inspiring re-location to techno capital Berlin, touring in Russia, Australia and Japan plus production work for scene leaders Innervisions and Ramp.
As ever the label artwork features bespoke illustrations from German artist Silke Eiselt of significant buildings in Dannys life in chronological order. This time its his Scottish high school and the first flat in Edinburgh after he left home. Awww.
Bergerac 003 Sales Notes
The A side If Only The Past is a scorched earth peaktime ode past mistakes. With pounding drums, a stomping bassline and disembodied voices its almost military feel was influenced by (several) exploratory trips to the Berghain.
B1 Alone Always is possibly the wonkiest Red Rackeem track to date. Sliced and diced off kilter samples and funked out drums mix with a raw square wave bassline. It poses the question Do you feel alone on your own?
The last track on the record Right (All Night) is big room technoid marriage of dark and light which somehow manages to mix steamrollering drums with melodic shards of hope. Yeah I did just write that last bit.
